The Horse and His Boy is a novel by CS Lewis, the fifth book in his Chronicles of Narnia series. The main characters are two runaway slaves: a talking horse named Brie and a little boy named Shasta. The book covers their hazardous journey through a foreign land to return home to Narnia. Here I've visually developed the characters as well as the fisherman's hut that they escape from.
The cultures that CS Lewis created were fictitious but the one shown in this book is loosely based on Spanish and Mediterranean cultures, so that's where I looked for inspiration. I modeled the architecture off of plastered houses found along the Mediterranean coast. The book also specifically describes an 8-point star as the emblem of their kingdom, so I included that as a carved detail on the stable. Since this is the place where Shasta has been held captive all his life, I wanted to give it a trapped and hopeless feeling. I desaturated the colors in the beginning to give it a muted feeling and made the colors more vibrant once the horse Brie appears and hope for their escape grows. I also modeled the fishing nets hanging to dry to look like spider webs to imply a feeling of being trapped. I modeled Brie's saddle after a simplified version of Middle Eastern formal riding gear, and also based the outfits of the human characters off of Bedouin and Arab styles from similar regions, including specific details from the book like Tarkaan's spiked turban and round shield.
