Happy Chanukkah, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!!! What a festive and joyous season we are in! My family celebrates both Christmas and the Jewish Holiday Chanukkah, so it is always interesting reflecting on both of them side by side.
Of course, I grew up going to church, so Christmas is permanently ingrained in my brain as the celebration of Jesus's birth. It is marked by the nativity scene, Christmas carols, and the annual reading on the gospel of Luke. (The first part, anyways. Since this is the only time of year we can read that. ;) Chanukkah, on the other hand, is not so well known. The very brief summation is that God performed a miracle for the Jews when they took their country back from their Greek dictators. He helped them regain their country, rededicate the temple to Him, and multiplied the holy oil so that it would last all 8 days until they could make more. Now we celebrate 8 nights
